You might want to try reading the user info for this group, and then posting your request over in [info]tech_support, which is where this sort of thing should be.

the first thing you need to do is delete all registry files beginning with the letter "C" (barring those ending is an "idy" if you have any.

That should fix it, but if it doesn't, you could also try inserting well cooked polenta into your CD drive. If you lack a CD drive you can use the USB, but you'll have to switch from polenta to cornbread (better structure).

Since you can't read the User Info and understand it, what makes you think you'd understand any instructions we'd bother to give you?

can you ping domains?

ie open up a command prompt and type

ping google.com

its should respond with an IP address. If it doesnt know the name then it probably means you dont have a DNS server configured for your Wireless account.

Disowned - not because you tried troubleshooting, but because it was pretty much crap troubleshooting.

I can think of at least a dozen reasons you'd get no name or IP address while pinging which aren't related to DNS issues.

lol, well i had a go rather than proclaiming how l33t i am. It could be one of 1000 things. From wireless not turned on to DHCP not being enabled on the wireless router. Speaking in terms that the user understands is hardly something that is 'crap troubleshooting'. So before shooting off at the mouth Mr ImAl33tcuntandUrNot try actually helping rather than proclaiming that your epenis is bigger than mine. I hope your not in the IT industry cause its wankers like you that give us all a bad name.

I think that you have hit upon a fundamental truth of existence.

Or, at the very minimum, an indicator of failing at IT. I can't count how many of the folks at my last tech support gig were IT professionals who couldn't get a job in actual IT.

it's probably because you're spelling "wireless" as "wirless"

you've probably got some corrupt registry entries in the wireless connection wizard. could be a bad driver as well since it shows being connected but you can't get anything.

open up my computer
click on your c drive
click on your windows directory
click on system32
click on the config directory

delete all of the files in that directory, make sure you empty your recycle bin, and then restart. the system should recreate the files and remove the corrupt entries.

good luck.

Valis

No it isn't a helpful time of year. It is the time of year to start the systematic ritual killing of family members and all who wander into this group actually asking for help. Not to HELP THEM!!!

I am not very good with computers in the way of setting things up.....

You're also not very good with LJ in the way of reading the community info for the community you have just joined and/or posted to. This seems like it should be the absolute basic of common decency.

so I need a helping hand!

And a clue.

I have just acquired a second laptop that I am trying to use wirless on.

Typos aside, God only knows what you did to the first one; I'd rather not know myself.

It says that I am connected...

Damn. I wish my wirless would talk to me like that. I get all these useless error messages and error numbers and dialogue boxes and stuff displaying on my screen instead.

but when I go to pull up any websites it won't work!!

That sucks.

i have disabled all the firewalls....well, at least i think i have.

How many firewalls do you have?!

someone please help! it is driving me nuts!!

Short trip.

you can IM me on AIM at Ellot79

I'd sooner drown.

or leave a comment...thank you SO much!!

You're welcome. I do believe I shall.

THANK YOU. I've been waiting to use that one for a long while now - seriously, I made it close to a year ago and no one's done anything quite meritous of it before now, and it's just not often we get the good hearty foole through here.

PS : We're not a smart elite. We're a 'common sense' elite. In this world, that's sorely lacking far more than smart is.

The fix is quite easy:
* first, log in to LJ on your other computer.
* second, go to http://community.livejournal.com/techsupport/profile and read it.
* third, contemplate the zen of what you have just read.
* fourth, learn the meanings of these abbreviations: RTFM, STFW, BTGDB (read the fucking manual, search the fucking web, buy the god damn book)
* fifth, go ask someone who is paid to care.
