I just want to make sure I comment back to all the wonderful, positive comments left on my post. I did read the userinfo which stated that if I did choose to make a post here that I am the only one that could be held responsible for any problems. I know that you all work in call centers and talk to people all day long...I know it starts to make you feel smarter than the people you talk to...like some sort of elitest computer nerd posse. My advice for you (since I KNOW you are dying to hear it) is to step away from the computers...go live life. And while you are at it....fuck off.

Happy Holidays everyone...your tech support jobs have really made you nice and interesting people!

Didja actually get as far as the second sentence? Y'know, the one that says "THIS IS NOT AN ESTABLISHED TECH SUPPORT HELP COMMUNITY. THIS IS FOR THE TECH REPS TO VENT AND LAUGH AND COMMISERATE."

Because, if you did, and you *still* posted your question, and you're back in here being snotty about the responses you got, you just got in line with the lusers we support day in and day out, and have done nothing to distinguish yourself as an intelligent human being.

So you *knew* that we would not look helpfully upon your post, and yet you chose to post it anyway, knowing the probable outcome? And you still have the balls to act suprised when we don't kiss your ass?

We need a word that describes how foolish this is. Something sufficient to convey the total headsmackery that you inspire.

Consider, if you will, the following euphemism.

You go to the house of a world-famous baker and ask to taste one of his tasty blueberry muffins for free. (Really, really nicely-like.) He, who has just had a long day of baking, tells you to get lost. You don't get what you want, so on your way out you flip him off and shit on his front door.

Solution? You could have just gone down to the bakery and bought one of them muffins. Sheesh.

(I heart my muffin-based euphemisms. And no, I don't work in tech support.)

take those with a bit of a clue for granted. We do live lives, many of

For once I wasn't going to jump in on this one, as I felt your ignorance had spoken for itself. But since you've asked for it this time, I thought I'd just mention that it's people like you that are the reason this community exists. People that swear up and down they have read the instructions and yet have missed the obvious, and then turn around and harangue people when the response they get is not the one they expect. Unlike in the real world where we have to kiss ass and be polite to the crap we're given, put up with the stupidity and bullshit of people for the sake of just getting stuff done, here we can call people on it and refuse. It's our own little power trip, really. We didn't ask you to come here, and in fact signs were posted on the door of what would happen if you did. In fact, most of the community is public and might have indicated that what you were looking to get out of us was probably not to be found here.

Fact of the matter is in what we do we ARE smarter than the people we talk to. You may be smarter in what you do, but if we come to you for advice in a subject area of your expertise we follow the ground rules. All we ask is that you do the same. Dealing with people who refuse to display common sense day in and day out is a large part of why we're this way in the first place. I doubt you ever looked at it from our POV, but here's a glimpse into our world. Want more of one? Read some back posts here - it doesn't take being a geek to understand a lot of this.

We do live lives. Many of us have families - believe me, we don't get rich in this business. There's more than one person here that likes pumping a big box of ammo into targets (i.e. recalcitrant computers) downrange and posts pictures of it. Heh, read some of our profiles. We're strange, I guarantee it. Living life is something we definitely have a handle on.

I can lead the clueless to the clue brick, but it doesn't mean they have to take it.

So you posted a technical question to a group that explicitly said that technical questions need to go elsewhere, as this group is for blowing off steam at idiots who ask the wrong technical questions all day long, not for answering technical questions, and if anyone tries asking a technical question, they're going to get the same warm and hospitable reaction as someone walking into gang country dressed in the wrong colors and throwing up the wrong gang signs.

I really don't think there's anything to say that my compatriots here haven't already said, though they probably said it rather more crudely than I would have.

Despite the downtrodden nature of my bleak existence, I laughed at this. I laughed until it hurt, and given the hangover this morning it didn't take much.

Since I don't have a life, I was obviously drinking in solitude with Linux staring back at me while we made sweet, sweet love. I put on my robe and wizard hat, and put my 1 in its 0. I tied it to the bedposts, made it beg and called the whole thing Digital Rights Management.

Or I hung out with my friends last night. At a real place. But that's not possible, obviously, since I am a member here.

Robe + Wizard Hat = Win.

Some of us do not work in call centers. Some of us have to go face to facce with people that know what a computer is, but have no clue about how it works, why it works, or why they watch their gay midget porn during a power outage on it. (true story)

We have made every attempt to dissuade people asking for actual technical support questions in this community. I even set up an off topic community for members to ask other members technical questions.

The baker analogy posted here is accurate. I have a friend of mine who absolutely refuses to do ANY computer support work during his off hours, unless it's one of his personal machines, or one of his housemates. (or if he genuinely feels like it.) I know I don't.

We do have lives here outside of the grey room/cubicle/server room/call centre that we are parked in. You'd be shocked, surprised an amused at some of our hobbies and interests. Telling us to go live life is just the final attempt to make you feel better then us.

The 'we are smarter then you' comment? We pwn j00 as far as technical knowledge is concerned. That does not nesseciarily make us geniuses in your chosen field, whatever that may be. For example: WHile I have a metric fuckton of experience with computers, I know jack and handy about the financial drivetrain that runs my employer. (and having seen bits and pieces of it, it's pretty damn impressive for a non-numbers dork like me.) But that's not my job to know these things, it's someone else's. It boils down to "We know our chosen profession very, very well. We may not know dick about anything else."

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some errands to run in the big blue room, which require me to get dressed, groom myself in a reasonable manner, and interact with the rampaging hordes on the interstates.

ad hominem: Latin for "to the man." An arguer who uses ad hominems attacks the person instead of the argument. Whenever an arguer cannot defend his position with evidence, facts or reason, he or she may resort to attacking an opponent either through: labeling, straw man arguments, name calling, offensive remarks and anger.

Since you're so happy with the positive comments on your last post, I'm sure you're just all fuckin' a-flutter with the joy you're hearing now.

Did you have to practice being a whiny little rag, or did it come naturally? Perhaps your parents instilled this self-righteous sense of entitlement and superiority? Presuming, of course, that your parents chose to keep and raise you, once they saw what a little bitch you were turning into.

We don't just feel smarter. We *are* smarter. Smarter people don't necessarily know the answers - but they damn sure know (a) where to find them, and (b) how to RTFM.

So, in all honesty ... you can commence with your own fucking off. Preferably unlubricated with two fists.
